the Valley of the Kings

the Valley of the Kings

Valley of the Kings – Luxor’s Ancient Royal Cemetery

Introduction :

Hidden in the desert hills on Luxor’s West Bank lies the Valley of the Kings, one of Egypt’s most fascinating archaeological treasures. For nearly 500 years, it served as the final resting place for Egypt’s most powerful pharaohs of the New Kingdom, including Tutankhamun, Ramses II, Seti I, and Thutmose III.

Today, this UNESCO World Heritage Site remains a symbol of ancient glory, mystery, and art that has stood the test of time.

⚱ History and Discovery :

The Valley of the Kings, known in ancient times as Ta-sekhet-ma’at (“The Great Field”), was chosen as a burial site to protect royal tombs from grave robbers. The location’s steep limestone cliffs made it ideal for hidden tomb construction.

In 1922, British archaeologist Howard Carter made history by discovering the tomb of King Tutankhamun (KV62) — one of the most intact royal tombs ever found, filled with treasures and the iconic golden mask that captivated the world.

What to See in the Valley :

Visitors can explore several royal tombs carved deep into the rock, each decorated with stunning hieroglyphics and colorful paintings that depict the journey to the afterlife.

Top Tombs to Visit :

Tomb of Ramses III (KV11): Famous for its vivid artwork and massive corridors.

Tomb of Ramses IX (KV6): A large, beautifully decorated tomb showcasing scenes from the Book of the Dead.

Tomb of Seti I (KV17): The longest and one of the most beautifully decorated tombs, known for its exceptional reliefs.

Tomb of Tutankhamun (KV62): Smaller than others but historically priceless; a must-see (extra ticket required).
